about the band

Document 183 started in Alice-Anne’s living room, with a few of us getting together every week to play some of our favorite songs. It wasn’t long before we had a good set of songs from an eclectic group of singer-songwriters and bands. A few friends came to listen and found themselves eager for more. One day we started to think: what if we write our own songs? We started with lyrics, then tried a couple of different melodic ideas, then layered in some chords. “Rhetorical” was born, then “Epithet,” then a rush of songs.

Our writing process varies, but we always start with lyrics. We write about love, anger, friendship, loss, and just plain life. Sometimes the words arrive unadorned, waiting for the music to bring them to life. Some words suggest their own melodies; others are driven by particular chord progressions. Sometimes one of us will write a complete song and bring it to the band for finishing touches. With every one, we play around with our palette of sounds: acoustic guitars, bass, keyboards, vocal harmonies, mandolin, electric guitar, effects pedals, djembe, bodhran, pennywhistle, and anything else that suggests itself.

We’ve just released our first recording, a five-song EP called Italicized.
